bike ride
Neighbourhood Policing was introduced across our area in March
2007 and in our first full year we have made significant progress
in increasing the visibility of local Policing and in tackling and
solving Community based problems in partnership with other agencies.
We have also achieved a significant reduction in reported crime
across our policing area, crime figures fell by 16% over the last
year.

Sponsored Bike Ride
Deputy Chief Constable Stephen Long is retiring from Wiltshire
Police in July 2008. Before he leaves, Steve wants to highlight
the value of Neighbourhood Policing and so he has decided to visit
every Neighbourhood Policing area in Wiltshire – on his bike!
The ride, which will take place between 23 - 25 July and will
include Wiltshire Police staff and other colleagues, aims to raise
£10,000 to support local charities.
Money raised will be distributed amongst the women’s refuges
of Salisbury, Swindon, West Wiltshire, North Wiltshire and Kennet
Safehouse and Crimebeat.

Neighbourhood Watch
If you would like to receive this bulletin direct by email then
please send a brief email with your name and approximate address
to – matt.holland@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk
Community SpeedWatch
In our June bulletin we gave details of our Community Speedwatch
initiative.
The site selected for our 3 month trial is the B3080 (The Ridge)
Woodfalls and our first volunteers have undergone training in the
use of Speed monitoring equipment.
A further training session will be held shortly.
The initial trial in Woodfalls will be most relevant to those
living in Redlynch/ Downton parishes but we hope to involve volunteers
from other villages with a view to them gaining experience in how
the Speedwatch checks are carried out.
If the trial scheme is a success, we would then hope to establish
individual schemes within the other parishes.
If you are interested in being a member of a local Community Speedwatch
scheme, please contact us for more information.

Lottery Fraud/ Scams
Lotto frauds are becoming prevalent in the UK with promises of
huge winnings arriving in the form of unsolicited e-mail or letters
to UK residents. Invariably the communication will purport to come
from an overseas lottery and claim that the recipient has been allocated
winning numbers.
The recipient will contact the organisers, whether directly through
telephone, by post or e-mail and will be invited to send money in
to assist in the administration for the release of the winnings.
These winnings do not exist. This is merely a scam and attempt to
elicit money from unsuspecting victims. The real cruel part of this
scam is that suspects will build up a rapport with victims through
telephone contact in order to continue the flow of money.
If you receive any unsolicited letter which suggests that you have
won or are owed large sums of money, it is extremely likely to be
a scam.
Do not make any contact with the telephone numbers or email addresses
in the letter and under no circumstances send any money or complete
forms giving bank or credit card details.
Please remember – ‘If it looks too good to
be true – it probably is!’
Special Constables and Volunteers – could you help?
We are actively seeking members of the local community to work
with us as part of our local Neighbourhood Policing Team. Our local
Policing team already includes Special Constable Geoff NASH and
his support makes a massive impact on the levels of local policing
within Downton.
Being a Special Constable is a satisfying voluntary role - it's
a commitment to yourself and your local community. People from all
walks of life and sections of the community join the Special Constabulary.
At present in Wiltshire we have forklift truck drivers, IT managers,
retail assistants and mechanics as Specials.
Among our officers and volunteers are people who work part-time,
fulltime, are carers, students or took early retirement. You need
honesty, integrity and a sense of commitment. You must be physically
fit with strong interpersonal skills and the self-confidence to
deal with a wide variety of people.
After completion of mandatory training, we ask that you commit
yourself to a minimum of 16 hours duty a month, to fit in with your
own work / home commitments.
More information can be found on our website – www.wiltshire.police.uk
