Barford Day Centre

The Barford Day Centre was established in 1980 to provide care and company for elderly clients who find themselves on their own; The Centre also aims to give carers a little respite time.

The Centre is based in the Baptist Chapel Hall, South Lane, Downton, which is situated behind the White Horse pub.

The Centre is open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and provides a delicious home cooked lunch, tea, coffee, biscuits and a full range of activities. These include Scrabble, Bingo, cards, knitting blankets both for the local Dog’s Trust based at Newton Tony and to keep human knees warm! Clients enjoy keeping fit and have made their own keep fit DVD to show the younger generation how it should be done! The Centre also offers a full range of other entertainments including singing, slide shows, trips (past trips include Exbury Gardens, an old time musical show, shopping at Fareham and many more), and a wide range of visitors new and old who enjoy popping in to the centre to chat to the clients and to enjoy a cup of tea.

The clients enjoy a summer programme of Wednesdays spent in the homes of local hospitable hostesses, enjoying their gardens and spending time in different environments.

The catchment area for taking clients includes Charlton All Saints, Hale, Redlynch, Woodfalls and Downton.

Downton Horticultural Society

The Downton Horticultural Society was officially founded in 1905, although there is some evidence that the Society, in some form, existed before that date. It is a small, friendly Society with our membership ranging from novices and armchair gardeners to experts who exhibit at both regional and national events.

Each year we hold two shows, the Summer Show in late June and the Autumn Show in early September. During the year we also arrange a series of Garden Workshops where members get together to discuss gardening matters and possibly get advice from an expert on some aspect of gardening. Our main fundraising event is a Plant and Jumble Sale held in May. Our AGM is in February.

Both our Shows, the Plant and Jumble Sale and the AGM are held in the Memorial Hall. The Workshops are normally held in the Church Rooms in Barford Lane. Entry to all our events is free, although regular attendees are encouraged to become members of the Society. We are always pleased to welcome potential new members to any of our events.

Downton Bridge Club

Downton Bridge Club runs on Thursday afternoons at the Brian Whitehead Centre. The club started as a teaching club and plays "social" duplicate bridge. There is still an element of tuition with a short seminar followed by about 16-18 hands of duplicate bridge. It is intended that the club should bridge the gap between those who play home/family bridge (or those who have been on courses to learn the game) and the more serious bridge played played in the Salisbury clubs. There is a very mixed standard of play with some experienced players, but also many players fairly new to the game.

You do not need to bring a partner with you. Just turn up and we will find you a partner or play with you.

It is a very friendly club and players are expected to show respect to their partners and opponents at all times.

There are no courses for complete beginners at present, but if someone got a small group together tuition would probably be provided.

Time: Thursdays 1.30-4.30

Venue: Brian Whitehead Centre (next to Leisure Centre). Cost: £2/session
